Sedbergh Summer School

Sedbergh International Summer School returns for 2021, offering up to 7 weeks of English and Activities for ages 8-17. Some of this year’s highlights include:

Adventure Week

In 2019, we introduced Adventure Week, located at the stunning location of Brathay Hall in Ambleside. The course focused on outdoor activities and included 15 hours of English per week. We are delighted to be returning to Brathay Hall in 2021 in the first week of our course from Sunday 27th June – Sunday 4th July 2021. Students will then transfer to Casterton Sedbergh Preparatory School for the remainder of the course.

General English & Activities Course

Our course, located at Casterton Sedbergh Preparatory School in Casterton, offers 22 hours of English per week, as well as daily activities and excursions. The course was accredited by the British Council in 2019, with strengths noted in our course management, the premises and facilities we have available, and the quality of our English teaching. All of our enthusiastic teachers are native-level speakers of English and have at least 2 years of teaching experience. Many of our staff return year after year and are passionate about Sedbergh’s ethos.

Please see our dates below or on our website iss.sedberghschool.org. Families can register by completing our 2021 Registration Form or by completing our online Enquiry Form at  https://iss.sedberghschool.org/online-enquiry-form/. Parents can also discuss their children attending Sedbergh Prep or Senior School for one or more academic terms.

IELTS Courses

We are now offering two IELTS preparation courses, which both offer the official exam. These will take place on the following dates:

- Sunday 4th July – Sunday 18th July with examination on Saturday 17th This requires an additional night’s stay (Saturday 17th) at no extra cost.

- New for 2021: Sunday 1st August – Saturday 14th August with examination on Thursday 14th Normal departure day of Saturday 14th August.

The course involves 22 hours of English per week, and students will still enjoy daily afternoon and evening activities. Students on the July course will attend excursions as normal, while students attending the August course will replace the whole-school excursion on Thursday 14th August with a private excursion day just for them on Friday 15th, to relax and celebrate having completed their examination. Students are also able to attend for more weeks than stated above, with any additional weeks following the General English course structure.

Pastoral care & COVID

As a full-time boarding school, Sedbergh School has risen to the challenge of housing and caring for its students during a pandemic. We are successfully navigating social distancing measures in order to keep staff, students and community safe, and have been operating under the new measures for a full academic term. The school, and by extension the summer school, are keeping up to date with government guidelines and are putting in place safety controls to ensure our international students can attend safely. Should COVID still be a factor in 2021, Sedbergh ISS will ensure staff are equipped with the correct PPE (personal protection equipment), enforce social distancing measures and will deal with any suspected cases swiftly and fairly.

Students are looked after in the boarding houses by a team of House Parents, who help them settle in, ensure they have everything they need and take regular roll calls. A Welfare Officer (formerly Matron) oversees student health and wellbeing and deals with medication and visits to doctors or dentists. All staff are fully trained in Safeguarding and are dedicated to the wellbeing and safety of ISS students.
